What's the vibe

Wellhayes Vineyard offers a charming, intimate experience nestled in the rolling hills of Mid Devon. This small, family-run vineyard provides a wonderful setting for informative tours, allowing visitors to delve into the winemaking process in a tranquil countryside atmosphere.

Visiting information

Wellhayes Vineyard offers guided tours by prior appointment only, available on Wednesdays and Sundays at 3pm between May and September. These tours typically last around 1.5 hours and include a talk by the owner, a walk through the vineyard, a visit to the on-site winery, a glass of their award-winning sparkling wine, samples of luxury handmade chocolates, and a traditional Devon cream tea.

Wine sales are available seven days a week by appointment.

The vineyard also hosts a programme of classical music concerts in their tasting room (which doubles as a concert hall) during the Summer months, offering an intimate setting to enjoy performances with a glass of Wellhayes Sparkling Wine.

Well-behaved children are welcome on tours and cream tea is available for them at an additional cost. Well-behaved dogs are permitted on site but are not allowed inside the winery building. There is no accommodation directly on the vineyard premises.

The Wine

Wellhayes Vineyard specialises in producing quality English sparkling wine using the traditional method, made exclusively from grapes grown on their one-hectare vineyard. The blend typically features classic Champagne varieties such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier, alongside Reichensteiner.

Their sparkling wines have garnered recognition, with the current 2020 vintage receiving a Bronze medal at the International Wine Challenge 2025 and a Silver medal at the Independent English Wine Awards 2025. Owners Simon and Alison Routh oversee the entire winemaking process on-site within their converted stone barn, allowing them full control from grape to bottle.

The vineyard benefits from deep, free-draining red Devonian soil, which provides ideal conditions for their vines. There is no specific mention of the vineyard being certified organic, regenerative, or having other formal sustainability recognitions in the available information.
