What's the vibe

Alder Vineyard is welcoming, relaxed, and rooted in its Devon setting, sitting on the edge of Dartmoor with a strong focus on hospitality as well as wine. It works equally well as a café stop, a place to linger over a tasting, or a base for live music evenings, with a feel that’s informal, friendly, and very much part of the local community.

Visiting information

Return to contents
Alder Vineyard is open year-round and is easy to visit without advance planning, while still offering bookable experiences for those who want more structure.

Tours & Tastings:

Guided vineyard and winery tours require pre-booking and are typically available on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Tours last around 90 minutes, covering both the vineyard and winery before finishing with a tasting of current releases. Private tours for small groups are also available by arrangement.

Café & shop:

Alder’s café and shop are open daily from 9am to 5pm. The café has been voted Best Café in Devon multiple times and serves coffee, cakes, light meals, and local produce alongside Alder’s wines. The shop sells wine and a curated selection of local goods, making it a popular stop even for non-drinkers.

Accommodation:

Alder Vineyard does not offer accommodation directly on site. However, two well-established accommodation providers operate on the same farm and work closely with the vineyard:

Accessibility:

The main building, including the winery, is fully wheelchair accessible. The vineyard itself can be more challenging due to terrain, and visitors are encouraged to contact the team in advance to discuss individual needs. A full accessibility statement is available via a pop-up in the footer of the vineyard’s website.

Children & dogs:

Children are welcome throughout the site. Dogs are also welcome, including inside the building and the winery, making Alder one of the more genuinely dog-friendly vineyards in Devon.

Special events:

Alder does not host weddings. Instead, the focus is on smaller-scale, regular events, including monthly live music evenings and seasonal Sunset Tour & Paella Evenings during the summer.

The Wine

Return to contents
Alder Vineyard produces both still and sparkling English wines, made from Madeleine Angevine, Rondo, and Seyval Blanc. All wines are produced on site in Alder’s own winery, allowing close control from harvest through to bottling.

The wines have received multiple awards, including an IEWA Bronze medal and several WineGB West awards, reflecting consistency across both still and sparkling styles rather than one-off releases.
