What's the vibe?

Goose Beck started the way good things often do - a family planted some vines by hand and committed to seeing what happened. Since 2021, the vineyard has grown to 14,000 vines across 13 different varieties on a site in Bilton-in-Ainsty, tucked between Harrogate, York, and Wetherby in the Vale of York. The focus is firmly on sustainable growing: predominantly Piwi grape varieties, chosen for their disease resistance in Yorkshire's cooler, wetter climate and their suitability to an organic approach. The team is small - four family members, one part-time member of staff, and a steady rotation of volunteers. Their dog team handles pest management during harvest. 2025 is expected to be their first serious production year.

Accommodation: Five holiday cottages on the property are bookable via Yorkshire Hideaways. Cottages are fully equipped, pet-friendly, and have outdoor seating areas.

Goose Beck grows 13 grape varieties across 14,000 vines, with an emphasis on Piwi varieties - disease-resistant cultivars that suit the cooler, damper conditions of northern England without heavy chemical intervention. Their aim is to produce wines that reflect the cooler climate and unique terroir of the Vale of York. Watch for their first significant releases from the 2025 harvest onwards.

The vineyard is at Bilton Grange, Tockwith Lane, Bilton-in-Ainsty, York, YO26 7NZ. It sits between the A1(M) and York, roughly equidistant from Harrogate and Wetherby - around 10 miles from each. Driving from York takes around 20 minutes; from Leeds, around 30 minutes via the A64 or A1(M).

Around 20 minutes by car - the city offers everything from the Shambles and York Minster to a strong independent food and drink scene.

A handsome market town 10 minutes away, with good riverside walks along the Wharfe and a useful range of pubs and restaurants.
