What Makes a Vineyard Good for Christmas
The best vineyard Christmas events tend to fall into two categories: a proper sit-down occasion, a lunch, a party night, a tasting menu, or something more low-key, like a wreath-making workshop with a glass of something sparkling. Which one suits depends on who's coming. A works do or a big family gathering usually wants the former; a couple after an afternoon out usually wants the latter.
The range on offer is wider than it might first look. Alongside the big lunches and party nights sit smaller, cheaper ways to get a Christmas fix at a vineyard: small Christmas markets selling local crafts and food alongside the wine, late-night shopping evenings aimed at picking up bottles as gifts, and family-friendly days built around a Santa visit or a trail through the vines.
Booking early matters more here than for most vineyard visits. Christmas dates are often set months ahead, and the popular ones, particularly Saturday lunches and party nights, sell out well before December.
Weather is worth factoring in too. Vines are bare in winter and the ground can be wet underfoot, so an indoor or under-cover event, a barn, a cellar, a heated marquee, tends to make for a more comfortable visit than one that relies on being outside.
