What's the vibe?

Helme Edge feels like a genuine family affair - because it is. Alan, Fiona, and Tom Calder/Smith run tours themselves from their small vineyard at 226 metres above Meltham, looking out across the Pennines toward West Nab, Deer Hill, and the church steeple of Helme village below. It's a working hillside vineyard, not a polished visitor attraction. The person pouring your wine grew the grapes and very likely harvested them too. Tours are small, intimate, and always booked in advance. Come dressed for Yorkshire weather year-round - the views are worth it in any season.

Tours & Tastings

Tours last around 90 minutes and take in a vineyard walkabout, an introduction to English winemaking, and a sit-down tasting of three wines. The Charcuterie option adds a plate of cured meats, cheeses, and homegrown fig jam - worth the extra £10.

Booking: Essential - all tours must be booked in advance via the website or by contacting the vineyard directly.

Getting there: Parking at the vineyard is limited. The team actively encourages arriving by foot or public transport - buses run regularly from Huddersfield to Meltham, and the vineyard is walkable from the village. If you drive, they ask for a minimum of two people per vehicle.

Groups & Private Events: Private group tours, hen parties, and special events can be arranged directly by email.

Helme Edge makes three wines in small batches from grapes grown on their Pennine-facing slopes.

English Sparkling Solaris is made using the traditional Champagne method, from early-picked Solaris grapes. It's bright and lively, with fine bubbles and fresh fruit character.

Still Solaris uses the same grape picked at full ripeness - a medium-bodied white with citrus and green apple flavours.

Rosé is a pale pink blend of Cabernet Cortis, Rondo, and Solaris - medium-bodied with fresh red berry notes.

All three are available to taste on tours and to buy via the online shop.

By car

The vineyard is at 31 Harrison Lane, Meltham, Holmfirth, HD9 5RS. Meltham is around 7 miles from Huddersfield - roughly 15 minutes by car. Leeds and Sheffield are both around 40–45 minutes away. Parking is limited; the vineyard asks for a minimum of two people per vehicle if you do drive.

By public transport

Buses run regularly from Huddersfield bus station to Meltham. From the village, the vineyard is a short walk. The team actively encourages arriving this way.

Walking

The moorland starts almost immediately beyond the vineyard. The West Nab ridge and Deer Hill reservoir are within easy reach for a Pennine walk before or after your tasting. The vineyard can point you toward walking routes, some accessible by public transport from Huddersfield.

Holmfirth

Three miles south, Holmfirth is a handsome mill town best known as Last of the Summer Wine country. It has independent shops, galleries, and several good pubs - worth a stop if you're making a day of it.

Meltham village

The vineyard sits just a short walk from Meltham's centre. The village church and rectory are visible from the vines - the steeple you can see from the tasting room is the same one that's been there since the 1800s.
