What's the vibe?

Most English vineyards sit on south-facing chalk in the Home Counties. Robin Hoods Bay Vineyard is on a hillside above one of Yorkshire's most-visited fishing villages, looking out toward the North Sea. Rebecca and Ian Sheveling planted 20,000 vines here in 2017 - a considered bet on a coastal microclimate and two robust grape varieties suited to the north. Their first wines followed in 2022. The vineyard sits within the North York Moors National Park area and is run by just the two of them, with seasonal help at harvest. Tours and tastings were recently approved by licence and are being developed. As English vineyards go, the setting is extraordinary.

Tour and tasting are available from late April to October on Thursday and selected Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays for £20 per person. Check the website at bayvineyard.co.uk for current availability and booking details.

The vineyard is planted with two varieties: Solaris (14,000 vines, white) and Rondo (6,000 vines, red) - both well-suited to the cool, exposed conditions of the North Yorkshire coast.

A number of wines are created from these grapes including:

Dry White - from Solaris
Dry Rosé - from Rondo and Solaris
Dry Medium Rosé - a slightly softer style

The vineyard is at Greenhills Farm, Robin Hoods Bay, Whitby, YO22 4PJ. Robin Hood's Bay is around 6 miles south of Whitby and 20 miles north of Scarborough, just off the A171. From Whitby, follow the A171 south towards Scarborough and take the turning for Robin Hood's Bay village. The vineyard is above the village.

One of the most photographed fishing villages in England - a beach, independent shops, and a cluster of pubs and cafes crammed into steep cobbled streets. It's the traditional finishing point of Wainwright's Coast to Coast walk.

Whitby

Six miles north: the harbour, the abbey ruins, Whitby jet, and a strong claim to being Yorkshire's most atmospheric town.

North York Moors

The National Park begins on the doorstep. The Cleveland Way coastal path passes nearby, and the moorland inland offers some of the best walking in the north of England.
