What Makes a Vineyard Good for Mother's Day Events
If you're planning the day as a family, you'll want somewhere relaxed with room for children. If you're treating your own mum, a quieter, more polished experience usually lands better: an afternoon tea, a tasting menu, somewhere she can be looked after rather than organising it herself.
In previous years, afternoon tea has been one popular format. Kent's Balfour Winery has served one that starts with a glass of its Brut Rosé, Northamptonshire's New Lodge a sparkling cream tea on the terrace, and Shropshire's Hencote an afternoon tea with a welcome glass. Kent's Simpsons Wine Estate has paired its afternoon tea with a winery tour.
Others have gone for lunch. Devon's Alder Vineyard has run a breakfast club and a long lunch, with the first drink free for every mum, Hampshire's Hambledon has served a seasonal Mother's Day menu, and Dorset's Langham Wine Estate has offered a two- or three-course lunch with a glass of sparkling wine. Cornwall's Polgoon has served a roast from Zero Mile Kitchen.
Some vineyards have offered something to do. Cornwall's Knightor Winery has run guided winery tours, Kent's Gusbourne an estate tour with a tasting and three-course lunch, and Kent's Westwell a free place for mum on tours booked for two or more. Suffolk's Burnt House has run a bouquet-making workshop, and West Sussex's Kinsbrook a candle-painting workshop with wine tasting.
Distance matters too. A vineyard within an hour of home keeps the day relaxed rather than turning it into a road trip, so it's worth checking what's closest before booking somewhere further afield.
Mother's Day in the UK falls on Mothering Sunday, the fourth Sunday of Lent, so the date moves every year. It's worth booking as soon as an event is announced, as afternoon teas and lunches are ticketed at many vineyards and the popular ones fill up.
