Visiting Vale Vineyard

The Vineyard Tour and Tasting runs for two hours and costs £30 per person. It includes a walk through the vines, with commentary on vine management and wine production, followed by a tasting and a Snowdonia cheese platter in a restored traditional barn on site.

Tours run Saturdays at 12 noon and 4pm, May to September only, and are booked online by choosing a date and number of places before checkout.

The Wine at Vale Vineyard

Six wines come off grapes grown on site: Solaris, Seyval Blanc, Cabaret Noir, Pinot Noir Précoce, Rondo, and Divico, bottled as a Solaris white (£20), a red called Robin Goch (£23, Welsh for "red robin"), a sparkling rosé (£35), a still red called Vale Pinot Noir (£25), a sparkling white (£35), and a still rosé (£22).

The wines have picked up a run of medals since 2021: Welsh Vineyard Association silvers for the sparkling rosé (2021 and 2022), the Solaris white (2021), and the rosé (2023), plus a WineGB Wales regional win for the debut sparkling white and a "Best Alternative Red from the UK" award for Robin Goch.

Getting to Vale Vineyard

The vineyard is in Llandyrnog, near Denbigh in the Vale of Clwyd, North Wales.

What's nearby

The Clwydian Range is known for its walking routes, and Denbigh Castle, plus the market towns of Ruthin and St Asaph, are all nearby. The closest other vineyard on Vinebound is Gwinllan Conwy, about 11 miles north-west.

For the extra curious

Robin Goch, the vineyard's red wine, takes its name from the Welsh for "red robin."

Gwen and Rhys Davies both grew up on local farms and studied at agricultural college before starting the vineyard. When it was shortlisted for Rising Star at the 2023 Welsh Food and Drink Awards, Gwen called the nomination "extra special," saying: "An immense amount of work has gone into establishing the vineyard and the first grape harvests."
