Overview

What's the vibe?

Bures Valley is a new, family-run vineyard in the Stour Valley, overlooking the village of Bures on the Essex–Suffolk border. Chris, Laraine and Adam bought Butlers Farm in 2022, planted around 25,000 vines the following year, and released their first wines from the 2025 vintage.

It is not open to visitors regularly at the moment, with no set opening hours, tours or tastings.

Visiting Bures Valley Vineyard

There are no regular opening hours, tours or tastings. The wines are sold online and at Bures Market, next on 14 November, 10 to 1, where all three are available. Events are posted on the vineyard's website, so check there before you travel.

The Wine at Bures Valley Vineyard

Six grape varieties are growing here, including Marsanne, which is rare in England. The first wines, all £20 a bottle, are a Sauvignon Blanc, a Chardonnay and a Marsanne and Chardonnay blend.

The vineyard's notes list green apple, lime and peach for the Sauvignon Blanc, and describe the blend as the first made from English-grown Marsanne.

For the extra curious

The Bures Dragon is a local legend of a serpent-like creature seen near the Stour in 1403, and the vineyard has taken it as its emblem. The knight said to have slain it, Sir Richard de Waldegrave, may well have owned the land the vineyard now stands on.
