What's the vibe?

Hawkswood Vineyard was started by Michael and Irene Rhodes, a former surgeon and theatre nurse, after decades of visiting vineyards around the world following Michael's introduction to German wine festivals in 1977. They keep production to 1,500-3,000 bottles a year, because, as they put it, they do everything themselves.

Visiting Hawkswood Vineyard

There's no walk-in access. Individuals and couples can book onto published tour dates, usually Saturdays at 2pm, a running list updated through the year (some dates get cancelled around harvest). Tours cost £25 a head for a look at the vineyard and winery plus a tasting of 5 or 6 wines. Groups of 8-20 can arrange a private tour at 2pm on any day Monday to Saturday, subject to availability. Buying wine to take away needs a day's notice so it's ready to collect.

The Wine at Hawkswood Vineyard

Hawkswood's Bacchus has picked up a medal in each of the last six years, and its 2023 Pinot Rosé won a national gold and finished runner-up for Best Rosé in the UK. The current range runs to six wines at £20 each: Bacchus 2023 and 2024, Pinot Rosé 2023 and 2024, Pinot Noir 2023, and Solaris 2024, from vines the Rhodes tend themselves.

What's nearby

Hawkswood Vineyard is one of eight vineyards on the Suffolk Wine Trail, the county's official wine-tourism trail launched in 2026.

For the extra curious

Hawkswood has been named the best vineyard in the East of England, and its rosé was judged East Anglia's best in 2019, a strong record for a project that started in retirement.
