What's the vibe?

Danbury Ridge doesn't have a cellar door, and you won't find opening hours or a booking calendar on its website. It's a working wine estate in the Crouch Valley, not a visitor attraction, and it's the name most responsible for the valley's reputation. Jancis Robinson, Decanter and Vinous have all reviewed its Chardonnay and Pinot Noir favourably, and multiple critics have independently compared the still wines to Burgundy. If you can't visit, the wine is still worth seeking out.

There's no cellar door, shop or public tasting room here, and Danbury Ridge doesn't run tours in the way most Vinebound-listed vineyards do. Access works differently: the estate sells directly to a list of allocation customers, with releases twice a year in spring and autumn on a first-come, first-served basis. Buying directly from the estate can also lead to an invitation to a tasting or release preview later in the year.

Danbury Ridge makes still Chardonnay and Pinot Noir as its main focus, alongside a single-vineyard Octagon Block Chardonnay and a traditional method sparkling wine, Solstice, blended from 70% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Meunier with reserve wine aged in a perpetual foudre.

The 2023 Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are the entry point into the range. Critics have singled out the Chardonnay in particular, noting a level of ripeness and texture that's rare in English examples of the grape, with flavours running from crisp orchard fruit through to riper pear and peach. Jancis Robinson has reviewed the estate's wines, and further coverage from Decanter and Vinous has helped establish Danbury Ridge as one of the producers most credited with proving England can make serious still wine, not just sparkling.

The Crouch Valley has several neighbouring vineyards that do welcome visitors, if you'd like to explore the wider region. Crouch Ridge Estate and New Hall Vineyards are both well established with public tours and tastings, while The Althorne Estate, Clayhill Vineyard and Missing Gate Vineyard are all within the same cluster of villages between Maldon and Burnham-on-Crouch.
