What's the vibe?

Seventeen28 (previously Penn Croft) offers a top-class and engaging experience, set within regeneratively farmed vineyards. The atmosphere is cosy, particularly in the Cellar Door, which has 30 indoor seats around a wood stove and a covered outdoor seating area.

Booking: The Cellar Door takes walk-ins only, unless you have pre-arranged a party or event or are booked on a tour (tour groups get a reserved table). Tours must be pre-booked and typically take up to six people, with larger private groups by arrangement. There is a no-refund policy, and a booking can be moved once with 72 hours' notice.

Tours: The Winter Winery Tour (October to April, £35) is a winery visit followed by an in-depth tasting with a charcuterie board. The Summer Winery Tour (May to August, £46) adds a guided walk through the 12-acre vineyard site and a welcome glass of sparkling wine. Both are over 18s only. Private and corporate tours are available on request.

Opening hours: Open year-round, closed Monday and Tuesday. Hours change by season, so check the Cellar Door page before you travel. Cards only, no cash.

Food and drink: The Cellar Door serves all-day brunch from Wednesday to Sunday (bacon or sausage baps, sourdough toast, waffles, pastries, teacakes and crumpets), plus cheese and charcuterie sharing boards and a kids' lunch box. Wine is sold by the glass alongside local beer and cider and Moon Roast coffee. Little Fish serves sushi and sashimi at the Cellar Door, and food trucks visit on selected dates. A full restaurant is being built.

Special events: Seventeen28 hosts celebrations such as weddings, birthdays and anniversaries, with afternoon tea or a BBQ at the Cellar Door as options. The Red Lion in Odiham offers 10% off tours and wine when you book a room through its website. Audleys Wood in Basingstoke offers 10% off a winery tour and 25% off afternoon tea at the hotel.

Dogs and children: Dogs are welcome. Tours are over 18s only, but children are welcome in the Cellar Door, which offers a kids' lunch box.

Seventeen28 makes English wine using a small-batch, low-intervention approach, with barrels sourced from Burgundy. The range includes Village Bacchus, a Bacchus Reserve, a Reserve Chardonnay, a Pinot Noir, a Single Vineyard wine, and still and sparkling rosé. Many bottles still carry the Penn Croft label while the new Seventeen28 range launches.

Their wines have received recognition from the WineGB Awards. In 2023, their 2022 Penn Croft Village Bacchus and 2021 Pinot Blanc were awarded silver medals. In 2022, they secured three Silver medals for their 2021 Bacchus, 2020 Pinot Blanc, and 2021 Sauvignon Blanc. Their Penn Croft Village 2023 (Bacchus) also received a medal at the WineGB Awards 2024.

Seventeen28 is committed to sustainable practices, with regenerative agriculture in the vineyard. The winery uses solar panels, LED lighting and temperature-controlled tanks, and recycles wastewater through surrounding wetlands. Its sister company, Itasca Wines, provides contract winemaking for other producers.

By Car
Penn Croft Winery is located at Croft Lane, Crondall, GU10 5QD (the Cellar Door is at Clifton Farm). There is parking at the winery but not at the vineyard, and it is limited, so car-sharing is encouraged for tours and events.

By Public Transport
The nearest train station is Fleet, which is approximately 55 minutes by train from London Waterloo. From Fleet station, a taxi ride to Penn Croft Winery would take around 10-15 minutes.
